I think it’s fair to say, the pilots might just be using up vacation time before they’re fired. Essentially, an uncoordinated sit in where pilots just don’t want to deal with it any more. I can’t blame them.
- hammock 5y agoThe interesting part is, Biden hasn't issued an order yet. But Texas' governor has - prohibiting any mandate.
- ceejayoz 5y agoAbbott's being performative. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Supremacy_Clause https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Supremacy_Clause
- readflaggedcomm 5y agoThe State's prohibition affected city and county policies which had to be changed. It was noticeable in school districts of large cities, so clearly not performative.
- javagram 5y agoAbbott just issued a new order which applies to private businesses, not just cities and counties. That one is arguably performative, since OSHA and HHS are federal agencies and their requirements will override Texas law under the supremacy clause of the constitution.
- readflaggedcomm 5y agoThere are more than one, which provides an opportunity to always say someone is wrong in what one or the other means. Thanks for that.
- lettergram 5y agoI think they actually align, read the actual executive order. https://www.federalregister.gov/documents/2021/09/14/2021-19927/requiring-coronavirus-disease-2019-vaccination-for-federal-employees https://www.federalregister.gov/documents/2021/09/14/2021-19... Religious accommodations must be upheld (multiple federal judges are allowing this). Religious accommodations are really just an objection based on moral grounds. Saying “my body is my temple and I won’t put anything in it unless there are years of research” is valid by that standard. And thus far the courts have supported that. The Texas gov basically said you have to allow for objections under the law. Which in the US is very robust and prohibits things like discrimination. I view both mandates as not contradicting each other.
- wwweston 5y agoSince the orders under discussion stipulate inoculation or weekly testing, seems really unlikely the principal issue involved here is backlash from the substance of federal direction.
- sweettea 5y agoSW is a federal contractor, and the guidance for federal contractors, which has been published, has no testing alternative.
- knownjorbist 5y agoI've now seen two pictures from far-right grifter personalities showing Gadsen flags draped from planes. There's probably a greater chance of a feedback effect between a minority of pilots thinking and these personalities than there is with pilots, of all professions, collectively walking out over vaccine mandates.
