I agree with you about the article - but I reject your thesis that this is unknowable. you need to design an experiment to measure the success of predictive outcomes from 'depressed' and 'normal' people. does this generalize? probably not. I'd be more concerned about coming up with a characterization of who is 'depressed'..but presumably people have made some progress on that?
