You mean all that p-hacked, mostly unreproducible pile of dreck that gets published these days? Yeah, trust isn't complicated it is the wrong thing to do. But mistrusting the science doesn't mean turning to the snake oil salesmen.

Snake oil salesmen will sound trustworthy to them, because they also 'mistrust the science' (which happens to disagree about the usefulness of the product/opinion they are offering).
