I want to comment on something she just mentioned in passing, and that is the idea that reading sports statistics is beneficial because it is somehow "mathematical". This is a really old idea and seems to eventually come up in any discussion about getting boys interested in math. In truth, I don't see any way in which reading performance stats involves the kind of model building needed to solve math story problems.
