I prefer to build teams where learning and experimentation are aligned with business objectives. However, this approach doesn't work for everyone or for every business. There are many successful risk-averse businesses staffed by folks working ticket queues. In the end, it's about the culture. An autodidact will struggle in a ticket mill. A ticket puncher will struggle in a skunkworks.
