That was a great episode of Jim Al-Khalili's "The Life Scientific" which is worth listening to. It's an excellent series for anyone interested in science and engineering, he does a great job of showing just how varied science is, and also how varied the routes into science can be. Many of his interviewees end up in their specialisms thoough often very circuitous routes.
