Squid Game owes its popularity to anxieties of modern life

- belval 5y agoHard disagree, this article feels like it's trying to add a deeper meaning to what is ultimately a good but not that memorable Netflix series. Not that I have any proof to offer (to be fair the article is one big conjecture too) but people were attracted to Squid Game because it had a mix of gore, intriguing visuals (the masks with shapes) and came from a foreign country.
- smt88 5y agoI think you're absolutely right, and (sometimes) articles like this are just a writer's attempt to make an assignment interesting. Their outlet tells them to write about Squid Game, and if there isn't much to say (and there really isn't), they'll dig into it as a metaphor. We saw the same kinds of think pieces surrounding Tiger King, which was essentially a reality show where America laughed at meth addicts, cultists, and mental illness to make themselves feel better.
- birtoise 5y agoThat’s just your opinion in a sea of people saying the opposite. Sometimes we just have to accept we didn’t understand something, man. No need to be salty about it ;) Plus, several other art pieces fit into your generic, superficial description of “gore, intriguing and foreign”.
