I work the graveyard shift, babysitting a rack of servers that do batch processing for a state government's means-tested benefits programs overnight. I monitor the batches, handle deployments, and install OS patches. I do a maximum of 90 minutes of real work a night, but stay up in case something goes wrong overnight. It's the ideal gig: no meetings, no culture bullshit, and as long as I follow the run book, the machines stay up, and the batches work properly nobody gives a shit about me.

- jimmyvalmer 5y agoBabysitting is not "nothing." It's one thing to get paid and go fishing a la Peter Gibbons, it's quite another to sacrifice your circadian rhythm in the service of your employer's uptime.
