how is lua doing these days?
- kzrdude 5y agoOne ray of light is that Mike Pall is working on luajit again https://github.com/LuaJIT/LuaJIT https://github.com/LuaJIT/LuaJIT which at this point is a fork of mainline Lua in terms of version history
- wruza 5y agoI don’t want to sound too negative, but that also means that LuaJIT failed to increase its bus factor with these guys who took over the maintenance recently.
- kzrdude 5y agoNot too surprising, after all Mike wrote LuaJIT as cleverly as possible (*). And I really admire him. (*) https://www.linusakesson.net/programming/kernighans-lever/index.php https://www.linusakesson.net/programming/kernighans-lever/in...
- nerdponx 5y agoNeovim adopted it as its modern scripting language alongside Vimscript. And it now has at least two interesting scripting languages that compile to it, Fennel and Teal. So it's got quite a community of Neovim plugin developers writing Lua and these languages that compile to it.
- hkt 5y agoMake that three, as Moonscript is also great: https://moonscript.org/ https://moonscript.org/
- nerdponx 5y agoOf course! And Moonscript long predates the other two.
- iamevn 5y agothere's also https://typescripttolua.github.io/ https://typescripttolua.github.io/ which lets you piggyback off of existing tooling for typescript
- leephillips 5y agoIt is of major importance as an embedded scripting language. Most recently Neovim, but also it's now the preferred way to write Pandoc filters. And then there's LuaLaTeX, where you can script TeX's internals with Lua.
- ur-whale 5y ago> how is lua doing these days? Still heavily used in game development.
