She Had No Idea Her Dog Was Blind – Vet Declares It a ‘Medical Mystery’
- ALittleLight 5y agoThey should've put the obstacle course in the dark to confirm. I have a hard time believing that a dog has a perception ability unknown to man. If it appears to be the case, seems worthwhile to do a bit more testing than a backyard obstacle course.
- redis_mlc 5y ago> I have a hard time believing that a dog has a perception ability unknown to man Several animals have magnetic receptors, usually birds, and many detect and act on air pressure changes. Some women have 4 color receptors, allowing them to see one color band in 16 bits. This allows them to see through haze in some cases. Women are very empathic, and can read other peoples' emotions, often unrealized by men. Jimi Hendrix had synesthesia, associating musical notes with colors, hence "Purple Haze." Ozzy Osbourne is resistant to toxins, thought to be genetic.
- Justsignedup 5y agoAh this would confirm some earlier studies done with blind humans. The problem is that if there's brain damage preventing the higher brain functions from seeing, it doesn't mean part of the brain isn't aware of the image. They found that these blind people were able to navigate a complex course perfectly, and they just felt it was instinctual to turn here, or there. But their thoughts weren't connected to the vision so they couldn't read or use the vision for any complex function other than obstacle avoidance.
- duskwuff 5y agoThe phenomenon is known as blindsight: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Blindsight https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Blindsight
- fallingfrog 5y agoThe article states that the problem is with the dogs retinas though, not the brain. Even blindsight wouldn’t work. I’m guessing the dog can hear where nearby objects are, based on how sounds of footsteps bounce around.
