They have such massive amounts of power that society needs to make sure the power isn’t being used to harm society. IMO, this example isn’t why we should start putting Apple under scrutiny, but a reminder to continue doing so. It reminds us that bad things are happening at even the most respected companies — whether or not every report ends up being substantiated.
