- Blikkentrekker 5y agoAh yes, “rights”, the privileges of the man with enough wealth to file suit. History will not look back well upon this charade.
- philipov 5y ago"In its majestic equality, the law forbids rich and poor alike to sleep under bridges, beg in the streets, and steal loaves of bread." - Anatole France
- Blikkentrekker 5y agoIf only that were the reality if things. In practice, the rich are not even as forbidden as the poor from that.
- redis_mlc 5y agoI always admired the writing style of that quote. In the same vein, most if not all of the Jan. 6 convictions are likely plea bargains, since Capitol Police opened the doors for protesters, but those charged likely don't want to spend $20,000 or more on a defense lawyer. None had guns, and the FBI reported this summer that there was no coup attempt or insurrection.
- kitd 5y agoAnd unfortunately, the author comes from the UK which is now no longer under the jurisdiction of the CJEU. That might have provided him some protection.
- chippiewill 5y agoThe law in these areas won't have diverged significantly yet so he wouldn't have any less protection from the UK justice system compared to the EU.
- Quarrel 5y agoIn this case, I suspect that wasn't the concern. The UK currently replicates almost all the same provisions as the EU (because, it was part of the EU, and in leaving it was easier to just say, yes, we're keeping the rules the same). It will inevitably diverge from the EU rules, but most of these are identical for now. The case in the OP was against the Belgian Government, who do have the resources to fight silly lawsuits. Random individuals in most jurisdictions can't really entertain such things over something that doesn't make them any money against a trillion $ company.
