Top 350 HN Users
- zdw 15y agoWould be more useful if this could be sorted by average comment score. I'd wager that most of the high karma HN users got there by submitting a lot of articles that got voted up.
- raganwald 15y agoI’m #11, I get there by commenting a lot, but honestly most of my comments aren’t worth reading. The mean may be 8, but I suspect the median is closer to 2 or 3.
- tptacek 15y agoI rarely submit. The mean of my comment scores also isn't very instructive, because I get +2..+4 on every non-angry comment solely due to name recognition.
- DanielBMarkham 15y agoI had to vote you up for that. Apologies for the joke -- feel free to downvote. The meta was just too difficult to resist. But seriously, he's right: after a certain point you start getting upvotes just -- because. I'm not nowhere near as in the stratosphere as tptacek, but even I see it happen to my own comments from time to time. It was a lot more visible when everybody could see the comment scores.

- benologist 15y agoIf you comment a lot on new submissions that don't go popular then it's hard to even stay above a 2 average.
- nitrogen 15y agoThe same applies to older discussions that were popular, but have fallen off the front page. The solution, IMO, is to comment where you want to comment, and don't worry too much about your average.
- wglb 15y agoI seldom comment, but instead find articles that I like and submit them. But I do read all of tptacek's comments.
- iamelgringo 15y agoA couple of years ago, I decided I'd karma whore to see if I could get into the top list. I did that by pretty aggressively submitting new articles. And, it worked. Part of the reason that I initially karma whored was because I was trying to get a bit of name recognition for when I finally applied to YC. I applied this past fall. Didn't even get an interview, so one of my big motivations for being as active on the site was gone. In hindsight, I'm glad I didn't get in. It's given me a lot of perspective. I've thought a _lot about the incubation process. I've had thousands of conversations about startups and investors, and the incubator process at Hackers & Founders events over the years. I've also thought a _ton_ about why the demand to get into YC is so high. My current answer is that the market for early stage capital is extremely inefficient, even in Silicon Valley. There are hundreds if not thousands of early startups here, who have _no idea what investors are looking for. They have no idea how to approach an investor. They have no idea what investors are worth talking to at what stages, etc... And, because that market is so inefficient, there is an extremely high demand for intermediaries like YC, Angel Pad, Tech Stars, IO Ventures, StartX, etc... that can show them the ropes. But, these intermediaries don't really fix the problem. They are middle men, and they charge a premium in terms of equity stakes to be middle men. For investors, the incubators do fix the filtering problem, and that's certainly worth a great deal to them. For the startups, a lot of them wouldn't get their start if it weren't for the incubators. But, if the market was more transparent and efficient, there would be less of a need for intermediaries and middle men. So, we're going to try to fix these problems in the startup market at Hackers & Founders. It's a Quixotic task. But, I think we have a decent shot of being able to fix some of these long standing problems in Silicon Valley and help fix some of these problems globally. So, this past summer, we boot strapped an incubator though Hackers & Founders, to try and see if we could "fix" some of these problems. And, it worked. The six companies that we had weekly dinners with have all raised a total of $1.5M. And, 3 of the 6 are still heavily fund raising right now. And, I'm still working as a nurse. We're not going to make a lot of money at this. We're certainly not interested in becoming investors. We'll ask for an advisory stake, however. The chance to hack Silcon Valley is just a little bit too cool a hack to let pass by, however. I'm done with YC. I still have a lot of friends who are YC companies, and I certainly have a lot of friends here. So, now, when I come to post, it's to see what my friends are talking about, and maybe chat a little. I'm still picking up karma because of brand recognition, I think. But, I really stopped caring about how high my karma score was about a year ago.

- SoftwareMaven 15y agoMy karma is 1000 points low in Google's index. I wonder how that affects the "top 350" ranking.
- amirmc 15y agoWhen I try the link I get redirected to google.co.uk. Is this happening for anyone else?
- raganwald 15y agoI get redirected to google.ca and it frobs the parameters. Thanks, Google, once again for ruining things with your “region-specific” search experience.
- prawn 15y agoI get redirected to google.com.au, so same issue.
- ordinary 15y agoThe query is fairly easy to extract from the original URL, but here it is: site:news.ycombinator.com 3100...100000 inurl:"/user?id"
- kissickas 15y agoMaybe try using Google in SSL? It may force it to just take you to the results, but I don't have a way to test that. I get encrypted.google.com... (the query)
- blackboxxx 15y agoUnfortunately, this scoring of comments and karma preys on my OCD and competitive personality. However, until I get psychological therapy from a certified professional, I kindly ask you vote me up. Thanks.
- Zak 15y agoI see only 183 in the results, not 350. Mine is not among them, though my karma is in the appropriate range and higher than some that are shown. Neat trick though.
- benologist 15y ago3100 can't be the threshold for top 350 ... I'm almost on that and I'm a jerk.

- wazoox 15y agoI think the comment average to be a better measure. Some have high scores because they simply spend much too much time here :)
- grandalf 15y agoTrue, but some have higher average comment scores b/c they avoid making comments they expect will just earn 1 point, even if doing so would be beneficial to the discussion.
- tzs 15y agoOT: does Google intentionally delay results after 10 pages? On the 10th page, it made me do a CAPTCHA to prove I was not a bot, and then every subsequent page took a couple seconds to load. It had been nearly instantaneous before that.
- etcet 15y agoIt might have something to do with the query looking a lot like a google dork (a search used to find vulnerable web apps)
- burgerbrain 15y agoClicking through the pages of this triggered google's captcha for me.
