I've never understood that quote... Is he rising in defense of Texas, or is he saying Texas is his personal hell?

  Like "oh wait", it seems to derive humour from its implicit logical rebuttal: "But, Mr. Crockett Texas is hell." In a similar vein, this also from the 19th Century: A woman is only a woman, but a good cigar is a smoke. "But, Mr. Kipling a good woman is a ... oh wait."
