Facebook apologises as services including Instagram hit again
- outside1234 5y agoGET THOSE ENGINEERS INTO THE OFFICE /s
- trhway 5y agoMark heard you and didn't notice your small "/s", and so he is forcing everybody back to office in 3 months https://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-10064865/Facebook-gives-staff-three-month-deadline-desks.html https://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-10064865/Facebook-g... "outage is blamed on people not being in the office" One can imagine the smoking bottoms of the spine of the FB mid-management these days and the TC they would pay to any hire who is able to convincingly play a cloud reliability expert/architect.
- Johnny555 5y agoSince this outage broke the access card systems, they were probably better off with most workers at home with working internet than if they were at the office sitting in the parking lot looking around at everyone else. There are very few people who have the knowledge and authorization to fix a global networking problem (for example, I have no physical access to our company's networking rooms, nor do I have any credentials that would let me log on to a router). But sure, keep a couple of those people in the office just in case of emergency and they require physical access to the equipment, but whether random developers are at home or standing in the parking lot because they are locked out seems to make little difference in recovering the network.
- sp332 5y agoI think that was already the policy though. https://www.cnbc.com/2021/08/12/facebook-delays-return-to-office-until-january-2022-for-us-some-international-employees.html https://www.cnbc.com/2021/08/12/facebook-delays-return-to-of...
- DrBenCarson 5y agoA totally unsubstantiated thought--is there any chance engineers are taking Facebook hostage until Mark agrees to step down?
- xwdv 5y agoIt would be incredibly illegal. Not only would they land in prison, they’ll never work in the industry again.
- iratewizard 5y agoI would hire them after they got out of jail.
- jmeister 5y agoAnd they’d do the same thing to you.
- johnchristopher 5y agoTo do what ? After 2 000 years of jail time for terrorism they'd still be forbidden to breath within 2 000 miles of a computer.
- iratewizard 5y agoI have trouble believing you know a thing about the law when you don't know elementary school punctuation.
- comeonseriously 5y ago'Modern' punctuation isn't about rules, it's about style.
- johnchristopher 5y agoFor what it's worth I am always grateful for advice and correction regarding style, grammar, or punctuation mistakes :).
- root_axis 5y agoThis is horrifying. Get FEMA on the line. Call the national guard. I hope nobody dies. This is serious stuff here.
- uptownfunk 5y agoFor the data scientists- what would it take to prove that there is/isn't a statistically significant correlation (not causation) between Mercury retrograde and tech large scale events / SEV1's
- twofornone 5y agoDepends on how many cases of "large scale events" you have. You could calculate a simple correlation coefficient and even a p-value to loosely estimate causation, if you had enough data points.
- barbazoo 5y agoAs a noob in statistical analysis I'm wondering how would one calculate the correlation coefficient between two sets of dates (occurrences of something happening, in this example outages/SEV1s and days of Mercury retrograde)?
- RONROC 5y agoI guess the grand irony of all this is that data scientists — of which, the "good" ones (rational Spock-types, highly technical, sometimes to their own detriment) are, historically, not socially inclined — are the ones responsible for optimizing _social_ media platforms in the first place. But yeah, something something Mercury.
- uptownfunk 5y agoI think what you could do (scientists please feel free to correct me) is you basically separate days into two groups, 1/ days falling during mercury retro 2/ days falling during not-mercury retro (I think called direct motion). Then you look at the total LSEs/total days for each of the two groups and do a two-sample t-test...? Depending on the p-value you can conclude there is some correlation. Now for the fun part.. data acquisition. Anyone know a good source for tabulating LSEs/day?
- outside1234 5y agoGood reminder to just uninstall all of this spyware
