Amusingly apropos: Visual Studio Code was hanging when opening a remote session on my Raspberry Pi.
Turns out I had added "AddressFamily inet6" to the ssh config for connections from my laptop to the Pi. Once I changed that to "AddressFamily inet", it worked fine.
