State Department discloses number of nukes in US stockpile

  "As recently as 2003, the U.S. nuclear weapon total was slightly above 10,000. It peaked at 31,255 in 1967." I get that we were in a cold war at the time, but you'd think we'd hit a wall of diminishing returns somewhere before building the 30,000th nuclear weapon. How many cities did the Soviet Union even have?

    > How many cities did the Soviet Union even have? Cities are soft and easy, but not immediate threats; hardened targets that need a close hit (like missile silos) are an issue. And the more strategic weapons you have, the more the enemy needs to counter them, and the more you need to counter them...
