One of the recommendations I have seen for this as well is basically walking through a monthly budget using Monopoly money. Start with a pile of Monopoly cash that is your gross monthly paycheck and start putting away money in piles for taxes, rent/mortgage, food, insurance, savings, etc. I think it helps conceptualize some of the relative values of things and the spending/saving they can't physically see.
