I don't think such things will go away. HAM radio and radio operators are still plentiful, even though they are technically unnecessary for 99.9% of the population. I wouldn't worry about it too much. Even if Dell were to shutter their doors tomorrow, there would still be plenty of hobbyists and those willing to supply them.
