  But unfortunately he didn't. Whether it was momentary self-aggrandizement that he didn't or definite thought out policy isn't clear to me but I favor the former view.

  Back then, both Taiwan and Beijing claimed to be the true government of all of 'one' China. The KMT then was anti-mainland. Today it's more pro-mainland. China will not attack Taiwan unless there is good reason to. That would like destroying your own kitchen because it's infested with mice. You'd then have the cost of having to rebuild it. Easier to fix the mouse problem. China has it's red lines over Taiwan. I doubt they'll let them be crossed. As for Taiwan, I give them roughly a decade before they'll be clamouring to get onboard with the 'Number One' superpower on the mainland.
