- raverbashing 5y agoI wonder if the suspicion of Tritium contamination was investigated further

- revscat 5y agoIf dark energy is driven by a new light degree of freedom coupled to matter and photons then dark energy quanta are predicted to be produced in the Sun.” This seems very interesting but I do not understand it. This seems to be saying that dark energy is produced by the sun, and.. exists alongside baryonic matter? What is “new light degree of freedom”?
- petre 5y agoLight moving in another dimension?
- ISL 5y agoThe argument is the same for both photon and matter-couplings, but it is easier to think about for photons. If a particle has a photon coupling and has a lower mass than the energy of photons inside the Sun, then there is a chance that a photon can radiate one of those particles. Have a look at the CAST experiment for one of the standard examples of searches for such particles. For the layperson (and perhaps everyone), "new light degree of freedom" = new low-mass particle.
- buck4roo 5y agoAll matter particles have a resonant photonic wave state (Energy state). The two differ by how their waveforms are compressed or expanded in time. The above wasn't my hypothesis, can't recall the author, but it came to mind when reading this paper's theorized source. Based on movies of active sunspots, I can imagine those giant twisting magnetic fields on the sun's surface possibly being a source of unusual type of energy -- possibly emitting an unusual type of matter or photon.
- peter_retief 5y agoYou dont understand it because there is no such thing, its a scam.
- ziddoap 5y agoA great breakdown was given by Anton Petrov here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UzVXNFkI60Q https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UzVXNFkI60Q I also recommend his other videos if you enjoy space science.

- doctoboggan 5y agoIf I understood the video correctly, it seems like the new model was proposed after the experiment was run. Wouldn't that make it extremely easy to fit the theory to the experiment?
- beecafe 5y agoIf the experiment invalidates your old model, eventually you need to come up with a new one.
- naasking 5y agoBasically yes. This hypothesis has been getting way too much attention. Science journalism really needs to improve.
- kortex 5y agoYup. This hypothesis revolves around posited "chameleon-screened dark energy" - particles/fields whose mass and coupling with other field fluctuates based on their surrounds. While I guess this isn't impossible, it reeks of Conveniencium - a field with properties that are non-homogeneous and just happen to match your model at both microscopic and cosmic scales? Pull the other one. Xenon experiments have been undergoing a bit of a crisis of faith as of late. Each iteration is a cycle of of "we predict dark matter in this energy window" -> find nothing out of place -> "well we can't rule out the long tail" -> build a bigger, more sensitive xenon detector. Grossly oversimplified and it's been a hot minute since undergrad. But the gist is WIMPs are excluded from more and more regimes and they are running out of places to look.
- BurnGpuBurn 5y agoWell, if you believe hard enough that it exists, you will eventually find it, or fool yourself into believing you've found it. That basically sums up all dark matter research ever. Personally, I think the theories are wrong and dark matter doesn't exist. It's heresy to say so though in mainstream cosmology.
- oddlama 5y agoDark Energy != Dark Matter. These are unrelated theories for different things.
- nynx 5y ago2sigma isn’t a notable result.
