Let's assume it's true that FB/IG users are abusing each other and FB indirectly encourages it and magnifies per A/B testing for engagement/profit. (And that FB/IG isn't just getting the blame because that's where all the users are.)
What does that say about the users? FB isn't creating any of this harmful content.
If FB should be accountable for delivering and promoting the posts, shouldn't the users be accountable for publishing them? Where's the movement to shut down the Kardashians who are also billionaires from toxic posts of their own intentional creation, and who are doing it on many different platforms?

We can hate on FB/Insta as much we want. But the underlying problem is the users who create “toxic” content and the public who are intentionally spending significant amounts of time on these non-life-crucial platforms.
- reducesuffering 5y agoI can hate on FB/Insta as much as I want because that's not the underlying problem. The underlying problem is the network effects that cause people to post content to one distribution channel, so that in order to see everything my friends are up to and have segue's into conversations about various interests or events, I have to go through FB/Insta's client. We need an open protocol for content distribution so that if my friends want to use FB/Insta clients to post their photos/videos from their phone, I can subscribe and respond to that content or DM people from whichever client I choose, like not needing to wade through a sea of manipulative ads (propaganda). We should've had an optional extension to something like email, which includes a lookup like people find various acquaintances on FB/Insta. We already use our emails to sign up for these services...
- yunohn 5y agoA lot of your concerns have nothing to do with the claims being made in the article. Open protocols do not solve toxic content posted by people that users want to follow. These are societal ills, only magnified by global social networks. By hating on FB/Insta, we do not solve the issue that people aspire to unrealistic body standards, rampant materialism, or comparative anxiety.
