Creatures of the Popol Vuh
- cratermoon 5y agoThe Popol Vuh is an amazing read, and I have a copy of Recinos, Goetz, and Morley's English version (http://www.worldcat.org/oclc/230039019 http://www.worldcat.org/oclc/230039019) from 1981 on my bookshelf with the other religious books. If you're interested in an approachable retelling, Popol Vuh: The Creation Myth of the Maya (1989) by Patricia Amlin (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FHSOGryN-DA https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FHSOGryN-DA) uses actual images from the K’iche’ Maya texts.
- b0rsuk 5y agoI just learned Popol Vuh is more than a name of an old, obscure music band. "Hosianna Mantra" is an otherworldly music album, great for listening at night (mostly because it works when it's quiet). Favorite track: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wKk5HWa7jzw https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wKk5HWa7jzw
- Baeocystin 5y agoTo add on to this: One of the best Great Courses lectures I've listened to is Edwin Barnhart's Maya to Aztec series, and I can't recommend it enough. His love of the subject is infectious, and the Maya deserve more attention on the historical world stage as one of the very few locations to independently develop a true writing system. https://www.audible.com/pd/Maya-to-Aztec-Ancient-Mesoamerica-Revealed-Audiobook/B00TKIYO46 https://www.audible.com/pd/Maya-to-Aztec-Ancient-Mesoamerica... for the Audible link.
- 50 5y agoRelated: The German musical collective of the same name, Popol Vuh[1], who in my eyes is notably known for being behind the soundtrack of Werner Herzog’s Aguirre, the Wrath of God, are particularly great. For instance, listen to this lovely piece entitled “Song of the Earth”: https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=YjJSHogjsFw https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=YjJSHogjsFw 1. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Popol_Vuh_(band) https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Popol_Vuh_(band)
