Senator speaking from his yacht: “we need to tax the rich”

- 1MachineElf 5y agoI appreciate people being able to confront a senator unannounced in an open space. One question, is that boat really a yacht? Looks small to me. May not really be relevant. Joe Manchin's net worth is at least several million dollars, but it's not enough to classify him as part of the 1%.
- 0x000000001 5y agoOnly takes about $500k to be in the 1% https://www.businessinsider.com/how-much-money-you-need-to-make-top-1-percent-2020-2 https://www.businessinsider.com/how-much-money-you-need-to-m...

- frankbreetz 5y ago500k income, not networth. Parent was speaking of networth
- 0x000000001 5y agoSo he's worth several million but that's still not part of the 1%? what?
- polka_haunts_us 5y agoMy parents are worth several million, they've spent their lives as a high school teacher/administrator/community college professor and an administrative assistant. Some boomers were just able to buy houses and otherwise save for retirement because that's how the world used to work, it's crazy I know.
- 0x000000001 5y agoThat still makes them part of the 1% I think a lot of people get confused about the 1% and the .1% where the billionaires live.
- frankbreetz 5y agoJoe Manchin is not in the 1% by net worth either, He has a net worth of 7.6 Million[0] and you have to have a net worth of over 11 Million of be in the 1 %[1] [0] https://www.opensecrets.org/personal-finances/joe-manchin/net-worth?cid=N00032838&year=2018 https://www.opensecrets.org/personal-finances/joe-manchin/ne... - credit_guy 5y agoIt is technically a yacht, as it is 65 foot long, and the threshold for a yacht is only 40 ft. Manchin bought it second hand for $220k in 2013 [1] from a liquidation broker. - harimau777 5y agoIs the title of this a little misleading? The implication appears to be that politicians saying "we need to tax the rich" are hypocritical. However, the Senator in question is noteworthy because they are standing in the way of taxing the rich. So the fact that they are rich enough to own a yacht wouldn't be contradictory.
- aaron695 5y agoYes. It's at the stage where people are just told how to feel and they do Plot twist it's a house boat worth $220,000 (from a bankrupt sale). Arguably a working man's house. So is it hypocritical again? https://www.100daysinappalachia.com/2018/10/fact-check-does-joe-manchin-have-a-700000-luxury-yacht/ https://www.100daysinappalachia.com/2018/10/fact-check-does-...
- salawat 5y agoStart building a consensus then Senator. Let's see some skin in the game rather than cheap platitudes.
