Yeah Arthur C. Clarke (of 2001: A Space Oddessey fame, among other monumenal science fiction works) famously had polio, but later (28 years later!) experienced partial paralysis in his 40s. He ended up mostly in a wheelchair for the rest of his life. Prior to that he had no signficant health complications.
