BC residents dying at a faster rate from illicit drugs than Covid-19
- mthoms 5y agoWhat the submitter thought they were submitting: "See.. Covid risk is overblown! It's a scam!" What the article actually says: The increase in drug usage (and therefore deaths) is largely because of the stresses caused by the Covid pandemic. Not to mention: The headline is just plain false. It claims the number of deaths this year from drugs is 1204. The number of Covid deaths in BC this year? 1973. http://www.bccdc.ca/health-info/diseases-conditions/covid-19/data http://www.bccdc.ca/health-info/diseases-conditions/covid-19... Covid deniers (see submitters' comment history) would be hilarious if they weren't so dangerous.

Perhaps what they really meant is "because of the unnecessary government-imposed lockdowns"? https://www.wsj.com/articles/u-s-drug-overdose-deaths-soared-nearly-30-in-2020-11626271200 https://www.wsj.com/articles/u-s-drug-overdose-deaths-soared... > The number of Covid deaths in BC this year? 1973. Did they mean "the number of people who also had Covid-19 when they died"?
- soultrees 5y agoIt appears that you are putting your own feelings toward this headline and making large assumptions about the intent of the submitter or author. I read this article as a signal for how bad the drug problem is and not that COVID is unimportant. I live in Vancouver and anyone who lives here can attest that the scale of drug addiction in this city is on full display. COVID was a catalyst in this problem as the borders being closed, unemployment and isolation sent drug use skyrocketing.
- mthoms 5y agoI looked at the posters comment history before making the comment. They have a series of posts against covid measures, zero connection to BC and no history of posting about drug abuse issues that I could find. As a fellow British Columbian I felt a little offended they were using this issue for political points. They clearly have no interest in debating the issue (see lack of response here), they just wanted to get that tasty sound bite headline some visibility. Even though it took me only 30 seconds to prove it wrong. I don’t dispute anything you’ve said, and wouldn’t have commented like this if it weren’t for the commenters history. I like to give the benefit of the doubt in most cases.
