Guy Kawasaki has a great story here. As he tells it, customers surveyed about the Apple II said they wanted more memory, more color, and more expandability. What Apple delivered with the Mac was less memory, no color, and no expandability. The point is that customer feedback is great for gathering ideas to evolve a product, but you'll never get customer surveys to suggest an outright revolution.
