The Gradual Discovery of Glasses
- inside65 5y agoQuite a good read. Development in the world of eyeglasses seems as slow then as it is now. There are no major innovations in eyeglasses, probably due to the monopoly by luxottica. Eyeglasses today have pretty much leveled out at slim lenses with blue light filter. Admittedly, they're pretty nice (Cryzal in particular). The best frames I have seen let you drop in different sets of lenses (oakley switch series).
- zeristor 5y agoBrilliant, so this is why Danish for glasses is briller. Although I thought skin itself is Danish for shine, and indeed the root for the word shine. Like skip maps to the English ship. I just loved the idea that skin comes from shine the radiance of people, looking it up though it seems to stem from hide or peel; I’m not sure how one would peel the sun. I don’t think the Vikings were big on heliospheric physics and coronal mass ejections.
- MengerSponge 5y agoA nice Sunday afternoon read. One small mistake: the article’s phrasing implies that water doesn’t magnify, and that a spherical glass shell does, which is wrong on both fronts. “magnifying effect was produced by the water rather than the glass”
