> Stepsize, a firm that focuses on technical debt by tracking development issues in major code editors such as VS Code, conducted a fairly small survey of 200 software engineers to find out why they leave their jobs. The company said that 51% of engineers in its survey have considered leaving or left a job because of technical debt.
So basically this company's entire business is selling tools to manage technical debt, and they have an unscientific survey of 200 developers who say they've either left a job because of tech debt, or have merely thought about it? That doesn't fill me with confidence. In my experience, getting this frustrated about technical aspects of the job is a sign of burnout. Usually the big career-changing problem is somewhere else. This is, in fact, what this very survey shows as well.
- ThePadawan 5y agoRight? The 51% number is phrased very weasel-y. Here is the obverse statement: "49% of engineers surveyed have never even considered leaving a job (or left a job) because of technical debt."
