Busch sponsors NASCAR. What does drinking beer have to do with racing a car? Coke sponsors NASCAR. What does drinking a Coke have to do with racing a car? AWS sponsors NASCAR. What do cloud services have to do with racing a car? Visa sponsors NASCAR. What does a credit card have to with racing a car? Find anything with sponsors and take a look at how many sponsors are tenuously related at best to whatever they are sponsoring. Now, why all the fuss IF AND ONLY IF it has to do with women's breasts?
- happytoexplain 5y agoYou've hammered your point with four identical-structure sentence pairs, and used all-caps and absolutist wording, all in the service of implying, but not stating, that NASCAR is to Busch as women's chess is to breast implants, and so if the former is harmless than the latter is necessarily harmless. Analogies are extremely bad at making arguments about real world things, because they are typically presented with no supporting statements, as if their very existence is self-validating. Anyway, the difference is that chess has a history of sexism and female exclusion, and breast implants are frequently seen as demeaning toward women - not intrinsically, of course, but by context. Some people find this combination tacky, or disrespectful. Now, whether I think chess's history of sexism is a legitimate factor, or whether I think breast implants are demeaning in any given context, are both irrelevant. I'm sure I haven't provided the best possible explanation of how other people feel, but it is an obvious one.
- BrandoElFollito 5y agoI am trying to think about a sport that is not sexist and I have a hard time finding one. Maybe curling (that I know just from a few articles but they seems rather open) but really nithing else immediately pops out. This is just too say that I think that an activity where the only goal is to win will always attract egos and a sense of dedain for others. It is likely that the amateur side of sports is less sexist, at least this is what I witness with volleyball.
- z5h 5y ago> breast implants are frequently seen as demeaning toward women Despite the hammering, you’ve missed the point. The problem is people who see breast implants as demeaning towards women. The problem is people who are trying to find arguments for controlling women’s bodies and finding it so natural they don’t even realize they are doing it.
- OrvalWintermute 5y ago> You've hammered your point with four identical-structure sentence pairs, and used all-caps and absolutist wording, all in the service of implying, but not stating tone/style policing on HN? Maybe you should post some links that support your claim of > chess has a history of sexism and female exclusion While you are at it, you can ask some cancer survivors if they agree with you on > breast implants are frequently seen as demeaning toward women Or, would they rather return to a normal appearance after surgery? After all, the conventional implant sizes are all dual-use for both cosmetic, and cancer reconstruction. Many women from childbirth and aging, go from having larger breasts, to small breasts, after they discontinue breast feeding. So, you could go from being a "C" to an "A", and maybe you'll have breast drooping (ptosis) or maybe not, and being very happy with your appearance, to very unhappy. And suddenly you have to buy all new bras. In a severe case of ptosis, your breasts will now be down to your belly button. These are some of the less glamorous downsides to having children. > Some people find this combination tacky, or disrespectful. I'll need to remember to complain to MSNBC about the Viagra & Hair Club for Men commercials on my favorite stock market shows.
- ericcumbee 5y agoNASCAR is the abbreviation of a name so technically all caps is correct.
- mcphage 5y agoSo you don’t see any relationship between declaring 2022 the year of "Women in Chess”, and a company that specializes in breast implants?
- OrvalWintermute 5y agoWhen a young woman in particular receives a cancer diagnosis it can be life-changing. Your life may be severely changed, and you could die. You may potentially lose one of the things that define you as a woman. Your attractiveness will definitely be impacted. Your ability to breastfeed may be eliminated. Your ability to have children may be negated if you want to live, as some chemos are known to reduce or eliminate fertility, as well as your hair, among other things. You may be forced to harvest eggs if you want to ensure you'll be able to have children. If all these bad things may potentially happen to you, wouldn't you prefer to be able to return some semblance of normality after it is all over, and have your clothes still fit? I think it is a blessing that we live in an age where, whether for cosmetic reasons, or post cancer, a woman has the option to return herself. Just like I thank God that I live in 2021 where we have excellent dentistry and that we don't have to live with missing teeth, rotting teeth, and that through things like fillings, root canals, dental hygiene, regular cleanings, and implants we can retain, or rebuild our teeth til death.
