Review: The End Is Always Near
- riskneutral 5y agoHarsh review. Haven't read the book, by Dan Carlin's podcast is very good imho. Carlin makes it clear throughout that he's an amateur historian.
- thathndude 5y agoI’ve listened to quite a bit of his podcast (I’m not a die hard, but binge it during various work projects like paintings). And I can’t even count the number of times he’s crystal clear about who and what he is. Specifically “I’m not a historian.” So this reviewer is essentially criticizing the guy for doing his shtick, when Carlin is always honest and upfront about that. Makes the review seem petty and/or vindictive. Idk.
- Ozzie_osman 5y agoHaven't read the book, but Dan Carlin's Hardcore History is incredible. I've never binged podcasts, and I've never been a huge history buff, but I totally binged tens of hours. The episodes on the World Wars or Gengis Khan were just captivating.
- paulpauper 5y agoI was listening to the podcast, and about an hour in I was waiting for the joke or expecting it to be funnier, and then I realized it was the wrong Carlin..
- paulpauper 5y agoThis review told me nothing except that the author disliked the book. was expecting more examples.
- musingsole 5y agoThis review hinges around not knowing Carlin's argument in his book and implies this is because Carlin has a poorly thought out thesis. This misses the point of the book which is just discussing the events, the times, and the human-ness of it all. Carlin doesn't state a view on the great-mensch theory because he doesn't have one and isn't arguing one. In other words: . <- the point's over there, but the reviewer's over here.
- Zandikar 5y agoThis is a "review" from someone that claimed they didn't finish the book, or, perhaps they did on a previous reading, but don't remember reading it, and the reviews details are not only sparse, but don't make it out of the first few chapters (or even first few pages) with a few cherry picked claims the review author doesn't like. I haven't read the book, but I'm not about to take critical advice on it from someone who hasn't either.
