My last couple of jobs have involved being on slack almost all the time. Since when its down we couldn't do anything, I just got into the habit of keeping a Google Chat room that everyone knows about. If Slack goes down, we just hop into the google chat room. Google Chat got a lot better in the last few years, it's actually fairly serviceable now.
