Aren't best practices things like "don't roll your own crypto if you can avoid it", "store your code in version control", or "write down migrations as well as up migrations"? These are all choices where the right option has been absorbed into the craft. Civil engineering best practices are written in blood, but I think software engineering best practices can be stretched to include sweat and tears too.
