I tried Ray-Ban's dystopian Facebook sunglasses, and someday you will, too
- eigengrau5150 5y agoWhen Google made their own glasses we called them "glassholes", but since Mark Schmuckerberg is so in love with Neal Stephenson's metaverse maybe we should call people who wear Facebook shades in public "gargoyles". > Gargoyles are no fun to talk to. They never finish a sentence. They are adrift in a laser-drawn world, scanning retinas in all directions . . . You think they’re talking to you, but they’re actually poring over the credit record of some stranger on the other side of the room, or identifying the make and model of airplanes flying overhead.
- bryan0 5y agoAmazing. Stephenson’s prose is almost 30 years old and his colorful prediction of AR has not aged a day!
- RicoElectrico 5y agoIf there was a jailbreak to get rid of the FB's tracking and login crap, it could be useful for video mapping in OpenStreetMap - there are some street-level details like shops, road surface, house numbers, etc. that aren't visible in aerial imagery. Just take a walk with the glasses and later at home synchronize the recording with a GPS trace.
