'Overemployed' workers juggling remote jobs
- htrp 5y ago>Overemployment is not an entirely new phenomenon. It’s been an “open secret” in the tech industry for years, says an overemployed worker in his late 30s in the US Bay Area who goes by ‘Isaac’ in the overemployment community. He’s been working two jobs for years, and says he makes more than $600,000 doing it. Shoddy journalism by the BBC.... literally 1 source which basically is a anonymous worker promoting his blog and trying to sell his book.
- simmerup 5y agoThe BBC is getting worse and worse sadly.
- LurkingPenguin 5y ago> From Isaac’s perspective as an overemployed worker, and based on the activity on his website, one of the reasons people take on secret second jobs is because they feel disillusioned with the realities of corporate life. Some workers believe secret overemployment helps them break free of employers that haven’t given them that promotion or pay rise they’ve been chasing for years. So the solution to being disillusioned with the realities of corporate life is to double up on your misery by working for more than one employer? Even if you feel you're ultimately getting one over on your employer(s), unless you're in a totally unaccountable role for which there are no deliverables, deadlines, etc. and you don't have to even pretend to do any work, this seems like cutting off your nose to spite your face.
- AzzieElbab 5y agoOk, but how how do we maintain good work-work balance?
- belval 5y agoQuestion for those who have done something like this in the past: how do you balance between the multiple jobs? I only have one and it's already a fight to not have it eat up all my personal time (I am arguably terrible at setting boundaries but still) so how do you not end up neglecting the "boring" job of the two?
- htrp 5y agoYou're the bottom tier team member that the rest of your team complains about.... you don't work and hope the bare minimum keeps you from being fired.
- popotamonga 5y agoI won't even go there. Now that we spent half our days in meetings, how can that be done schedule wise? Nos sustainable except for the 0.01% that dont hace meetings. Or a different timezone but then you dont sleep, still not sustainable. This will never be a mainstream 'thing'
