Most large companies I have worked for now have switched to a system of only confirming employees employment dates and providing no other information. Litigation cost has driven this move. Seems like a good one, your entire career could be torpedoed by one disagreeable manager otherwise. Interviews are there to ensure the candidate is a good skill / social fit. If the interview is not doing the job then you need to change your interview process.
