I think it’s not that religion is good or bad, it’s what you replace it with. Humans are in some sense geared to mythical beliefs - believing in something higher than us sort of like a father figure, there is a reason every famous work of art or fiction exploits that - be it Harry Potter or Game of Thrones. You can go way beyond in the past and cave engravings and such also seem to tell the same story.
Wiping out clean religion (or the sense that there is a father figure watching and judging you) seems to have had bad consequences wherever it has been tried. And it has come back with vengeance. Go to StPetersburg in Russia in a church on Sunday - all the churches are almost full to the brink.
- Layke1123 5y agoNo, people aren't predisposed to believing in a father figure judging you. That's such a western biased view. People are predisposed to follow the crowd. Hence the dominance of religion in a prescience era. As a species, we are rapidly moving away from religion as a whole thanks to modern scientific thinking.

- angelzen 5y agoYour conscience is judging you. Your family is judging you. Your employer is judging you. Your neighbors are judging you. Your customers are judging you. We are social entities with a judgment organ: the brain. Good luck rationalizing that away.
- Layke1123 5y agoYou just rationalized it. Our brains are adept at trying to understand what others are thinking. That's my whole point.
- datavirtue 5y agoI don't think you got the memo. "Science" is the new religion. Tread lightly amongst the humans.
- Layke1123 5y agoScience is not a new religion. It never has claimed to be. It is a way of thinking different from thinking in terms of a real world and a "not real" world.

- tgv 5y agoI'd assume there aren't that many Trump/Brexit voters in St Petersburg's churches.
