I thought this sort of arrangement was pretty common for cashiers? If punishment weren't draconian business would cease. People I've known who've worked in retail and didn't seem to care at all about shoplifting have been very attentive to the receipts matching the till. Of course this arrangement seems unfair; this may be a good argument for going cashless.
