Why should I care, though?
"What state are you from" seems like pretty innocuous information. I'll readily mention that I'm from Seattle if it's relevant to the conversation or asked directly, and I tend to think of myself as being on the more paranoid / pro-privacy side of things.
All the big players already have my address because I gave it to them, and a stalker should be able to work that information out pretty easily because I post in the Seattle sub-reddit and otherwise engage a lot with Seattle topics.
- edoceo 5y ago> seems like pretty innocuous That's how they get you. It's a trap!
- handoflixue 5y agoYeah, but... what actually IS the trap? What bad thing happens because of this?
- Pokepokalypse 5y agoNOTHING; individually. This is the way statistics work. The threat is an aggregate threat. What happens when 150k people respond to a post.
- AlexAndScripts 5y agoYou'll happily mention it, and a human can find it if they look through your profile. ML will have a much harder time in comparison to going through some comments, all in a similar way, on a post where everyone is saying something about their state.
- handoflixue 5y agoYeah, but... what's bad about that? Why should I be opposed to ML knowing I'm from Seattle?
- cratermoon 5y agoThat's just a variant of the "nothing to hide" argument.
- cinntaile 5y agoDid you have some sources for your original claims? As it stands it sounds like just another conspiracy theory so some data would be nice!
- handoflixue 5y agoBut I'm voluntarily providing the information. "Nothing to hide" is about involuntary surveillance.
