Facebook will open up the Oculus Go to tinkerers with an unlocked OS
- cwkoss 5y agoOculus under facebook has been very hostile to sideloading and mod development. I don't trust this move - feels like Facebook will probably change the terms at a whim in a year or two.
- ciwolsey 5y agoThe Oculus Go is mostly irrelevant now anyway. They'd never do this for the Quest.
- vineyardmike 5y agoThis is FB so its always hit or miss, but it's great too see companies end-of-lifing products with an unlocked OS. Hopefully this means someone will be able to keep it alive, or use it for something useful to them in the future. > Carmack [the CTO] pointed out that the build will let anyone who finds an unopened Go in the future update the headset to the final version of the OS — even after the servers are closed. He also expressed hope that this will set a "precedent for when headsets go unsupported in the future." This is such a refreshing perspective from a tech company! I hope this sets the precedent for more companies and more products.
