I think the prevalence of sexist comments on HN is worth pointing out.
- Chris2048 5y agoYou're only pointing out your opinion on the matter - Without any authority to your definition and judgement on what constitutes "sexism". As a counterpoint: I can point out how little sexism there is on HN, according to my judgement. Is that of equal worth?
- easylayup 5y agoThis dude is also a racist: https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=28664520 https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=28664520 Of course the mods will ban anyone who points that out or takes issue with it.
- standardUser 5y agoFeel free to browse the comments, particularly the fine fellow trying to convince us all that women were never actually that oppressed to begin with, and then tell me if you think the tone on here is being fair to women.
- Chris2048 5y agoBut then you'd actually provide some context by replying to, or quoting, that post. Not doing so is the equivalent of a "me too" response*[0]. Also, I cannot find the post you refer to. Can you link to it? [0] not a reference to the #meetoo movement
- dang 5y agoYour posts in these threads have been breaking the site guidelines. Please stop pouring fuel on flamewars. https://news.ycombinator.com/newsguidelines.html https://news.ycombinator.com/newsguidelines.html
- easylayup 5y agoIt would be but the mods share their ideology with these guys so complaining will only get you scolded by some power tripping YC muppet.
- dang 5y agoIt's fine to point out problems with specific comments but your claims about "prevalance" and "dominance" are incorrect. They're far from prevalent or dominant, and it's a cognitive bias which causes people to arrive at such conclusions: they/you/all of us drastically over-weight the comments we dislike, which leads to false feelings of generality ("prevalence"). https://hn.algolia.com/?dateRange=all&page=0&prefix=true&query=by%3Adang%20dislike%20notice&sort=byDate&type=story&type=comment https://hn.algolia.com/?dateRange=all&page=0&prefix=true&que... https://hn.algolia.com/?dateRange=all&page=0&prefix=true&query=%22false%20feelings%20of%20generality%22&sort=byDate&type=comment https://hn.algolia.com/?dateRange=all&page=0&prefix=true&que... The truth is that HN gets all sorts of comments because it's an open public forum. It's divided in the same way that the public at large is divided—all over the world, because this is a highly international site. We can't expect immunity from bad or extreme comments under such conditions. All we can hope for is that most of those get downvoted, flagged, or otherwise moderated—which is precisely what happened to the comment you were reacting to upthread. If you see a post that ought to have been moderated but hasn't been, the likeliest explanation is that we didn't see it. We don't come close to seeing everything that gets posted here. You can help by flagging it or emailing us at hn@ycombinator.com. https://hn.algolia.com/?dateRange=all&page=0&prefix=true&sort=byDate&type=comment&query=likeliest%20by:dang https://hn.algolia.com/?dateRange=all&page=0&prefix=true&sor...
- racisthnmods 5y agoThere's a big world outside of the HN trashcan. It is widely accepted that "the orange hellsite" is a haven for right-wing sexist, racist, reactionaries. And here you are once again proving that point. There's a reason things like #hnwatch and shithnsays exists. Since the mods are hellbent on keeping this place full of racists, the best bet is to talk about it on other sites: https://twitter.com/search?q=%23hnwatch https://twitter.com/search?q=%23hnwatch
