EFF to deprecate HTTPS Everywhere extension as HTTPS is becoming ubiquitous
- Panino 5y ago> “After the end of this year, the extension will be in ‘maintenance mode’ for 2022,” said Alexis Hancock, Director of Engineering at the EFF. > Maintenance mode means the extension will receive minor bug fixes next year but no new features or further development. I'm at peace with that. HTTPS Everywhere is great and I've been using it for years. In the last year or so I've been using its HTTPS-only mode, and I very much prefer that to that of the Firefox built-in equivalent. Didn't even know Chrome had this option - I'll have to enable it there. Thank you, EFF!
- perihelions 5y agoWhat does HTTPS Everywhere do better than the Firefox built-in?
- jimmygrapes 5y agoI have noticed some unfortunate server settings that screw with https redirection, usually when it redirects to the www subdomain. It's as if https://example.com https://example.com redirects first to http://www.example.com http://www.example.com and then redirects to https://www.example.com https://www.example.com Sometimes it works sometimes it doesn't, but with Firefox's built in https redirect it often gets caught up in there claiming that I need to continue to the insecure version. I click accept and then it goes to the https version.
- perihelions 5y agoHere's a particularly broken example (I noticed it in an HN submission, it's a popular subdomain), http://tech.mit.edu http://tech.mit.edu https://tech.mit.edu https://tech.mit.edu
- josephcsible 5y agoNow I just need to wait for Firefox 78 ESR to go EOL, so that RHEL will finally upgrade to a version that has HTTPS-only mode.
