Wouldn't all tampering with FaceID involve shutting the phone off to disconnect and re-connect cables anyway, thus disabling FaceID until the correct passcode is entered?

This seems to be a different error message, where faceid can't be enabled in the settings at all.

You can totally disconnect and re-connect cables while the phone is on, although I have no idea what will happen if you do this with a new iphone.
