I like to use a phrase that sums up alot of this: social media has given the village idiot a megaphone.
As the author points out, we can no longer ignore this idiot.
- mistermann 5y agoSome people argue that an even more optimal approach is to develop/harvest the cognitive and social capabilities to conceptualize (cognitive) and discuss (cognitive+social) such people in terms other than "idiot", and that in doing so it may become apparent (fleetingly at first, more constant with practice) that all people are ~idiots on an absolute scale.
- mandmandam 5y agoRespectfully, I think you missed the point. The village is full of "idiots", but they're people who suffered serious head injuries, people who have been mercilessly exploited from birth, people who have trauma and no possible outlet other than the internet. And a lot of the rest of the village is full of people who are "alright Jack", people who think the "idiots" deserve their fate, people who need someone with a hammer to remind them of empathy. Wink.
