Ask HN: What's the most “well-crafted“ piece of software you use?

Foliate. It's an ebook reader. Fast, functional and immersive. I like using it in full screen mode, dark mode. Sometimes it feels nicer than a kindle device. What I like about it is, like any excellent software, you don't notice it. It gets out of your way and lets you do your task.

Foliate has gotten really good! When I tried it out very early in the development cycle it was quite buggy. I was using Calibre's viewer which is mostly great, but does take a while to start up. I think I can switch to Foliate when I'm reading on PC now.

iOS is pretty "well crafted", seeing how it has operated smoothly from day 1.

For mature software, Vim. For new software, I'd say 1Password. It's amazing how well it syncs with everything, across Firefox and Chrome, and how it handles not just usernames and passwords but gives a secure way to share secret plain text files, scan QR codes and more.

Selection: mpv, powershell, weechat (double e)

  > weechat (double e) why not irssi?

I've found weechat to be easier to configure with better defaults. Also cool: it's quite well written.

Probably grep.

mplayer in the console. I've been using it for fifteen years and it's such a great, minimal piece of software that just works.

It's not perfect, but I find Beyond Compare pretty essential (on Windows).

Oh yes there was a point in my career where I’ve used it more than my primary IDE. Beyond Compare is solid!!!

Interesting, how does this compare to WinMerge?

Taskwarrior [1]. Brilliant utility. Surprising amount of well thought out features. Very flexible. The C++ source code seems well organized on first glance. [1] https://taskwarrior.org/docs/ https://taskwarrior.org/docs/

Procreate, it's just so nice to use on the iPad Pro and refreshing compared to Photoshop for drawing
