If a company has to provide software updates forever for no revenue, eventually its business model will go upside down. I instead prefer a model where a tax is applied to all IoT sales. Then the manufacturer gets paid monthly out of a fund created by that tax. Then various abuses can be taken out of that fund: appliance support less than 30 years, electronics support less than 15, security or privacy violations, etc. Essentially, IoT companies need to earn their sale price over time.
