Blur Busters Law: The Journey to Future 1000Hz Displays (2020)
- selfhoster11 5y agoMy back of the envelope calculations put that kind of refresh rate at more than 230Gb/s if you wanted to send the pixels in 4K@1000Hz, uncompressed, with 10 bit colour (which is not unrealistic, HDR is being adopted). This is over 3x the bandwidth capability of DisplayPort 2.0, and is the equivalent of 2x16 PCIe 5.0 lanes. In short, it's a lot of data. This makes me think that perhaps the future of gaming may be that the GPUs move out of the PC and into the screens, with the "display" connection just being a data pipe that sends textures or compressed video for rendering/decoding on the screen. That, or fiber optic.
