Facebook to testify on kids' safety as lawmakers probe whistleblower revelations
- adolph 5y agoLawmakers realize theres no clickbait like baiting the intersection of "think of the children," "there aught to be a law" and "speaking truth to power."
- jgalt212 5y agojust because their motives may not be true or earnest, does not mean the problem is not real.
- adolph 5y agoIf motive is not in alignment then "the problem" is an excuse for a solution that may not address "the problem" at all. Bootleggers and Baptists is a concept put forth by regulatory economist Bruce Yandle, derived from the observation that regulations are supported both by groups that want the ostensible purpose of the regulation, and by groups that profit from undermining that purpose. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bootleggers_and_Baptists https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bootleggers_and_Baptists
- 6gvONxR4sf7o 5y agoI'll be very curious to hear how they justify their answers from last time they testified, in light of new info painting those answers as lies.
- hulitu 5y ago"We take care of the children. They all have to give us the name, age, a telephone number and google or facebook password when accessing instagram. Of course we keep this data only for law enforcement autorities."
- avalys 5y agoThe accusation seems to be that Instagram is "harming" children in the same way that teen fashion magazines "harmed" children before social media. But, evil Big Tech is involved instead of "Teen Vogue", so of course this is a major story in the Washington Post.
- mbg721 5y agoThe likes of Teen Vogue have also gotten the attention of members of Congress; it's not one or the other.
- willcipriano 5y agoI'd suspect that Teen Vogue is as culturally relevant to young people as Rolling Stone or Mad Magazine. They are relics of a long gone era. Instagram is actually in use, so it makes sense that it gets the heat.
- dont__panic 5y agoAre you suggesting that neither Instagram nor Teen Vogue harmed teens, or is this just whataboutism? Things that cause harm to people deserve our attention and criticism. If we recently learned that previously peaceful animals like chipmunks occasionally attacked people in national parks, that would warrant a news article too, no?
- 6gvONxR4sf7o 5y agoNo it's not the same. The new revalations are about internal research showing that instagram is more harmful than its peers. Even if most social media were on par with those magazines, a big part of the point is that IG is worse. Also that they lied in front of congress. All that said, it seems evident that ads for weight loss being put in front of your communications with friends is worse than the old magazines, which didn't suddenly show up whenever you made a phone call.
- twofornone 5y agoHaving watched a few of these hearings, i cant help but feel like they're purely for show. Hours of corporate-speak and deflection in response to questions by elected officials who fundamentally do not understand the technology or its influence. Why bother? Pandering for votes?
- ronsor 5y agoOnce again politicians are going to drag tech CEOs and executives to Congress in order to look good. Most likely nothing will be done except for a few more lobbyists getting hired in the near future.
