Tesla's ‘FSD’ Isn't What Elon Musk Says It Is. The Government Is Calling Him Out
- leobg 5y agoThey should have called out Ford a hundred years ago. Misleading Henry called that thing on four wheels the “automobile”. When, clearly, it needs a driver.
- dragonwriter 5y ago> They should have called out Ford a hundred years ago. Misleading Henry called that thing on four wheels the “automobile”. First, “automobile” refers to moving unders its own power. It’s literally “self-moving”. Second, it wasn't named by Henry Ford.
- leobg 5y agoWhat about an airplane’s autopilot? Self steering. Don’t need a human pilot, right? Point is, the name of the technology rarely describes what the thing does. Because if it’s a new technology 1) there is no adequate word in the language and 2) the technology itself is evolving, so the name is more of a symbol for the hopes and aspirations behind that technology. If you do a survey among Tesla customers, you’ll see that nobody of them thought the car would be capable or allowed to drive on its own without human oversight and intervention. Tesla says that on the website, there are hundreds of videos and blog articles, and the vehicle itself reminds you of that when you a) enable FSD in the settings and b) whenever you activate the function. Literally nobody is being mislead here, and nobody needs to be protected from being mislead. It’s a clickbaity non-story we’ve been hearing since 2016. It has nothing to do with protecting consumers.
