Why everybody’s hiring but nobody’s getting hired
- the_only_law 5y agoI’m close to wrapping up a job search, after hearing how hot the market was. It started out pretty casual. Just opening up my profiles, rewriting my resume, etc. I as only looking at remote roles. The results ended mildly disappointing. I only actively looked to apply to jobs that looked really interesting to me. This includes everything from the product I’d be working on to pay, to roughly how I expected the interview to play out. I quickly realized this wasn’t going to work. On paper, I was completely unqualified for most of the most appealing looking roles and didn’t bother applying. For others, less appealing, but not totally so, I applied. These mostly involved working on tech stacks I hadn’t used professionally or in domains I wasn’t apparently experienced in. However this was mostly all on paper, and I still fit at least a little of the description and thus applied. As an additional note, most of these were tech companies (in that tech is their primary product), which I haven’t worked at. Most of them were not end-application development, but a few were. Of those, I was either quickly screened out with a generic rejection email or just never heard anything at all. On the other front, I did get some recruiter interest, but much less than expected. Majority of the recruiters were either shopping crappy positions, jobs that did not fit my experience or were just spammy (cough AWS). For the few not in that category I went ahead and engaged. Probably around 60-70% of the recruiters I got were shopping roles in the state I live in, regardless of their remote status, which puts an unfortunate cap on salary. None of the roles were particularly interesting work wise, but a few were talking numbers that I was ok with. A vast majority were 3rd party. Most of them were very similar to my past roles (non tech enterprise companies working on low-scale internal stuff with semi-legacy tech) This ended with a single offer that I’m debating. The work is mostly uninteresting and unlikely to drive my career in the direction I want, but the number is just barely good enough for me to switch and is probably the best I will get. It is slightly better than my last roles in that it would provide better professional development and fill in a few resume gaps that proved to be an issue this go around. Sadly I think I have to resign the search for an ideal role and take what I can get. I’m slightly shocked at how bad the process was, as I expected things to get significantly easier with more experience, but this felt worse than searching at the entry level. For reference, I have about 5 years of experience mostly doing prior-referenced type work, but have a few notable items I will sometimes include on my resume or bring up in interviews, but they never seem to land the sort of impression I’m looking for.
- didntknowya 5y agoi find half the postings on most job site are just duplicates posted by recruiting companies who just rewrites the original company's post.
- tuatoru 5y agoHiring and changing jobs is being affected by Gresham's Law ("bad money drives out good") applied to job marketplaces. Everyone uses mass-market electronic marketplaces, and for that exact reason no-one can find a good match in the ceaseless roar.
- hbcondo714 5y agoI applied to a couple jobs posted here on HN with detailed emails covering my applicable industry experience in the same roles and never heard back from either: https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=28161397 https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=28161397 https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=28040823 https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=28040823
- IronWolve 5y agoI'm hooked into multiple recruiters to find local office work, and they keep telling me the roles are just not coming in. I'm on the automated weekly jobs list from multiple companies. I also check linkedin and other boards, local jobs seem to be very low for my area. Rare interviews, but I'm competing with a ton of unemployed people after mass layoffs from 2020 still looking. I talk to recruiters from texas to the florida, and If I want to move, there is work. I'm in a major metro on the west coast, so I'm guessing for me, people are not back in the office here yet. Also, I think recruiters are taking advantage of it, I did find 2 jobs for 1/4th the pay.
